CyPhy Works Provides Army Tethered Drone for Force Protection
October 27, 2017 Danvers, MA. — CyPhy Works announced today that they delivered another large order to the U.S. Army’s Rapid Equipping Force (REF) for CyPhy Works’ PARC (Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications) System, to be deployed overseas. PARC, a tethered drone, addresses the need for a persistent eye-in-the-sky by flying for days at a time. Serving soldiers worldwide, the REF identifies emerging capability gaps and finds rapidly deployable solutions to current military operations around the world.
While the current fleet of Small Unmanned Aerial Systems deployed by the military is filling a vital need, their flight time is measured in minutes. All are susceptible to jamming and electrical interference. CyPhy Works’ PARC is a portable tethered drone that has the ability to perform long-endurance flights lasting hundreds of hours. The tether serves as PARC’s high-power conduit. Communications and video also flow over its patented Kevlar-strengthened microfilament tether, and cannot be jammed or spoofed.
“We’re honored to continue to be selected by the U.S. Army to deliver these critical assets,” said LTC (R) Matt England, CyPhy Works’ Vice President for Government Systems. “PARC was created to bring a range of capability needed most by our servicemen and women in the most austere locations worldwide. Being asked to provide more PARC systems is both a humbling and proud time for everyone at CyPhy Works.”
The current version of the PARC is designed to meet military requirements in the field for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Force Protection (FP). The PARC began being deployed shortly after successfully passing U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC) testing in 2015.
Commercial applications for the PARC system include facility and event security, deploying communications equipment, and inspection.
About Army Rapid Equipping Force:
Reporting directly to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, the REF provides rapid material solutions to Soldiers for urgent combat requirements by harnessing current and emerging technologies. The Department of the Army first formed the REF in 2002 to support Soldiers in Afghanistan. The organization has met challenges as diverse as improving force protection, providing ISR in austere locations, improving operational energy sources, and enhancing communications. The REF maintains a forward presence in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait; and routinely coordinates with forces deployed globally.
